Struck for just one year, this 1817 Spanish Half Escudo is the only 19th century coin of its type issued in all of Europe. The coin was created because the Phillipines, a Spanish possession, did not have a mint and needed gold Half Escudos. This led Spain to mint this one-year-only Half Escudo for shipment to the Phillipines. By 1818, Spain had struck enough coins to satisfy the need so production of the Half Escudo in Spain ceased. The obverse of the coin features King Ferdinand VII and on the reverse is the Spanish Coat of Arms.
