Fabled French merchant and adventurer Jean Baptiste Tavernier was born with a passion for the exotic. In the last half of the 17th century, he made countless trips from Paris to India and the Far East. He met with kings, emperors and maharajahs to deal in precious gems and rare treasures from around the world. Most famous for acquiring the legendary Hope Diamond in 1642, he also toured the fabled mines of Golconda, survived sea combat between the Dutch and British and tangled frequently with pirates.
