Finding inspiration at the 'End of the Earth'

It's hard to understand why Magellan didn't just turn around and give up. Navigating the southernmost tip of South America is tough today, in 1520 it must have been near impossible. It's a ruthless route along jagged rocks and rough seas. It didn't help that when the Portugese sailor cruised through, the coast was lit by flames that he believed to be the campfires of natives waiting in ambush (causing him to dub the island "Tierra del Fuego," or "Land of Fire"). And then of course, there were the glaciers.

They call that region 'the end of the world.' It's truly a place of rare beauty, and apparently some of it inspired our designer. The Aquamarine &  Pink Tourmaline Necklace features over 50 carats of hand-strung icy blue aquamarine and fiery pink tourmaline. Interspersed between the translucent gems are gold vermeil Bali-style spacers and lustrous pink cultured pearls. The necklace fastens with a gold-filled toggle clasp and includes a 1" extender. The "fire" and "ice" play beautifully together, forming an exotic treasure that would have made Magellan look twice. Best of all, to make this necklace in the old days you would have had to circumnavigate the globe to collect all the precious ingredients. But we've already done it for you.
