In 1857, a group of prospectors descended on a hill outside of Virginia City, Nevada in search of silver. They found it. Word spread that they had struck it rich. Soon, miners came from all over America to take part in this Wild West silver rush. With the precious metal mined from the famous Comstock Lode, a few lucky men (aka The Bonanza Kings) made their fortunes. The wealth that poured out of those hills transformed San Francisco. And the silver eventually found its way into one of the most desired coins ever circulated. Today you can own a piece of American history with the Stauer Morgan Silver Eagle Watch.
After the Comstock discovery, the United States Treasury bought millions of dollars in silver for minting new coins. One of the first was the Morgan Silver Dollar. First issued in 1878, the Morgan is revered as one of the most beautifully designed coins in American history. One side shows an elegant profile of Lady Liberty, while the reverse displays a majestic eagle, wings raised, clutching an olive branch and a bundle of arrows. George T. Morgan, who designed the coin, studied the bald eagle in nature to best depict the noble bird with its wings outstretched. Discontinued in 1904 and re-issued in 1921, the Morgan remains a must-have coin among serious collectors.
At Stauer we are always looking for unique watch designs and in this case it only took a coin flip to find the perfect face.
