World’s most valuable timepiece disappears

Back in 1933, the single most important watch ever built was engineered for a quiet millionaire collector named Henry Graves. It took over three years and the most advanced horological techniques to create the multifunction masterpiece. Decades later, when the ultra-rare innovation was auctioned off, it sold for the record price of $11,030,000 to a secretive anonymous collector. It disappeared for years, hidden in a private vault. Currently, the watch is on display in a Geneva museum. But we believe that a classic like this should be available to true watch aficionados, so Stauer replicated the exact Graves design in the limited edition Stauer Graves ’33 Wristwatch.

The antique enameled face and Breguet hands are true to the original. But the real beauty of this watch is on the inside. We replicated an extremely complicated automatic movement with 27 jewels and seven hands. There are 210 individual parts that are assembled entirely by hand and then tested for over 15 days on Swiss calibrators to ensure accuracy. Each Stauer Graves ‘33 watch is then re-inspected in the United States upon its arrival.

What makes rare watches rare? Business Week stated it best... “It’s the complications that can have the biggest impact on price.” (July, 2003). The four interior complications on our Graves watch display the month, day and date, while the 24-hour clock graphically depicts the sun and the moon. The innovative engine for this timepiece is powered by the movement of the body as the automatic rotor winds the mainspring. It never needs batteries and never needs to be manually wound. The precision-crafted gears are “lubricated” by 27 rubies that give the hands a smooth sweeping movement. And the watch is tough enough to stay water resistant to 5 ATMs. The movement is covered by a 2-year warranty.

We’ve done the unthinkable. Not only have we emulated this stunning watch of the 1930s but, just as surprising, we’ve been able to build this luxury timepiece for a spectacular price. Many fine 27-jewel automatics on the market today are priced well over $2,000 dollars, but you can enter the rarified world of fine watch collecting for less. You can now wear a millionaire’s watch but still keep your millions in your vest pocket. Fits wrists 6 ½"–9".

Great

I have owned a Stauer watch for 3 to 4 years. Mine is very similar to the Grave 33. I believe it is called the 1933 Automatic. It has the main dial plus three small dials and a window for the date. The movement of the watch is Chinese made. The quality is absolutely amazing. For a mechanical watch, it is extremely accurate. Being a self-winding watch, the motion of one''s wrist winds the watch as it is being worn. This feature is the core design of an automatic watch, therefore never needing winding or a battery. A well made automatic watch winds efficiently using a well designed rotar. It will keep running for about a day after it is left and not worn. This watch does exactly what it is designed to do, unlike the poorly made knock-offs that often do not run in the morning after it is left through the night during sleep. The workmanship of my Stauer is very refined. The hardware is good. It is a gorgeous watch with a classic retro look. If you want to tell time accurately, you can do that with any cheap digital or quartz watch. They are available at about $10. The Stauer does it elegantly and in style. There is something elegant about a watch that runs on mechanical parts and never needing to be wound. Like all mecahnical watches, if you drop it on a hard surface, it may quit and needing service. That happened to me once and cost only $10 for a repairer to fix it. It is not Swiss made and it is not as fine as one that costs over $20,000. But it is an excellent watch if you appreciate a classic design inside out. I paid $100 for mine and I am extremely happy with it. The pins for the band needed to be replaced. I called the company from where I bought the watch and extra sets of pins were immediately sent to me free of charge. Mecanical watches are not for everyone. It will quit if you don''t wear it for a couple of days. Sophisticated toys are for aesthetes like fountain pens are. If you are one and with a modest budget, you will be happy with a Stauer. You aesthetes know who you are and for those who are not, they won''t get it and they should buy a watch at the drug store for $10.

Best for the price

I purchased a graves 33 few months ago. The first one they sent me about 2 minutes fast a day. I called customer service. They told me to sent it back with the return label that came with the shipment and drop it into Fedex box. No shipping fee. No problem, get a replacement a week later. It was exactly as they advertized. It''s 99.99% accuracy with a price that no other watch company could match with this kind of workmanship. I also own 2 Selko automatice watches and they are not as accurate as Graves. If you stop wearing them for a day. they will stop. The worst things is they also cost more. Now the Graves is the only one I wear everyday.

Replacement for swiss watch

I''ve had the same automatic watch since 1973, a Valgine. With the last repair estimate of $150 to clean and replace the crystal, I decided a Stauer watch made more sense. Picked the Graves 33 stainless which came in a very classy box and would make a great gift. Very pleased with the outstanding value and quality. Plus customer service was especially helpful.Like all automatic watches, it keeps reasonably good time, being consistently fast and getting faster with time. The crystal is very tough, and impressively scratch resistant. I replaced them yearly on the other watch for scratches. This one was flawless for six months until my tween threw it down on a granite floor in a fit of Mall deprivation which caused a small chip inside the crystal. I''d taken it off to keep it safe while I did some rough contruction work. Stauer will fix it for $30 plus postage which is very reasonable except I''ll be without it for quite a while, so maybe I''ll treat myself and buy another of their styles. The watch''s cons are it is considerably bigger and heavier than my Swiss watches, more dive watch size. A good sweat caused a watch shaped burn on my wrist which customer service suggested was a reaction from the adhesive residue from the protective plastic on the back. A good cleaning fixed the issue in any case. Also, if you are of reading glasses age, the complications are very difficult to read without glasses, and the set buttons are easy to bump which changes the settings.

Great Watch Reasonable Price

I have looked at the Stauer watches for some time. I have a collection of mostly wrist watches numbering in the 60s. The classic look of these watches has always caught my eye. My secretary and office manager got this as a Christmas gift. I remain impressed with the looks and function of this automatic watch. Timekeeping is acceptably accurate. The stem is easily deployed from its screwed down position and the second hand stops so the watch can be "hacked" to a time signal when it is pulled out all the way. The only drawbacks are that it is difficult to screw down the stem into its locked position and I am disappointed that the buttons to adjust the month, day and date are not deactivated when the stem is in and locked making it possible to change these settings accidentally while wearing the watch. This hasn''t happened yet, but it would seem to be standard feature missing on this watch. Otherwise, I am very pleased. So much so that I then purchased the rose gold moon phase watch to add to the collection. See that watch for my review.

Stauer Graves

I am very pleased with this watch. It is a classic style and has a smooth sweeping second hand, not the herky-jerky movement found on most watches. I guess it is the jewels that smooth out this movement. Mine loses 1 to 2 minutes a day which is a little upsetting but the beauty of the face more than overcomes the need for daily adjustment.I continue to get compliments. It looks like a much more expensive timepiece.

OK So Far

Ordered my first watch from Stauer about a month ago - a Graves 33 stainless. It arrived in about a week and looked great. Unfortunately, the manual day advance button did not work, so I sent it back the next day. Today, I received the replacement watch (a new Graves 33) and everything works. I used the $100 gift certificate to buy a ladies worth avenue diamond watch for my wife, and she likes it.The Graves 33 is an impressive looking watch, I like the seven hands and the 1930''s look. I do not plan to wear the watch when doing manual labor or working in confined spaces, as I tend to be hard on watches and wish to avoid breaking the somewhat exposed band pins, crown or buttons. I am overall satisfied with the product and the service from Stauer. If the watch quits or does not perform as expected during the next year, I will update this review. So far, I am amazed at how such a watch as this can be assembled for under $100!

Nice watch, but slow

I got the Graves ''33 replica watch in September. I think it looks great and I''m happy with it, except that it loses about 15 seconds per day, so I have to reset the time about twice per week. When I contacted Stauer, they told me to set it on its side (pin up) overnight, which didn''t change anything. People are correct to note that the setting bumps are hard not to hit, meaning that the mini-dials are easily knocked out of time.

EXPECTED GOOD, GOT GREAT!!!!

I recently purchased 2 Staur watches, the Metropolitan and the Staur Graves ''33. Sometimes when you order online you are alittle leary about quality and value. Your quality and value are exceptional. I was overjoyed at the presentation and quality of both watches. I would not hesitate to recommend your company to anyone.

An excellent watch, but . . .

First, let me say that I own six Stauer watches and plan to buy more. The Graves is a fine looking watch, keeps great time, and is a joy, but it has one major flaw, the buttons that advance the day, date, and month are too easy to press by accident. When I put the watch on in the morning, I set everything accurately, but by noon, some of the hands have advanced because of my movements (I have a desk job). A great watch, but I now avoid watches that have these sorts of buttons on them. However, many of Stauer''s watches use a different type of mechanism for setting, so I stick to those other watches.

Awsome watch

I got this watch a week ago and I really like it. I love the style and the look and get a comment on it at least once a day. The reason why I did not give this watch a perfect rating is because I found that it is very easy to accidently push the month changing button and have to reset it at least once a day. Needless to say that can get a tad bit annoying. Also, I bought the gold ''33 Graves watch. I am fairly certain that it is real gold but on the bottom of the watch it says "all stainless steel case" I don''t mind this but I really wish that it actually said what karat the gold is. I''m sure people can level with me...But, it is a great watch and recomend it to anyone...

Stunningly Beautiful Watch! Better Than The Pic!

This is a truly beautiful watch. I waited to order it because the pic on the internet site made the face look an ugly yellow color -- which it is not. The face is actually white with a thin gold line around the inside of the four slightly sunken complications. Perhaps the reflections of the gold lines made the face look yellow in the picture. The web site pictures of stauer watches seem to be a lot lower resolution than pics I''ve seen on other sites selling similar watches (much more expensive). A higher resolution and better lighting would be a marketing improvement for the Stauer Graves (BUT WHATEVER YOU DO PLEASE KEEP THE PRICE LOW).This is a stunningly beautiful watch--my second Stauer purchase. I''ve been wanting this watch a long time, and am glad I got it instead of paying twice as much for the one from the other site with the high resolution pics. I think this is the most beautiful watch I have.

Gorgeous watch with a few drawbacks

I purchased my Graves ''33 replica last year and still think that it is the most beautiful watch on the planet. It does run too fast (about a minute per day) and I constantly have to adjust the day/month/date buttons when they are accidentally bumped. But all in all I would say that for $99 this is a great watch. I have had dozens of compliments from those who have an eye for a nice timepiece.

Received as a gift...now buying it for a gift

My spouse purchased the gift as a surprise for me after we saw it advertised in the Smithsonian Magazine. I loaned it to a friend to wear in a play he was performing in. He loved it so much that I decided to purchase one for him as a gift. The watch lives up to all claims and is wonderful to own and wear.

Graves "33"

Love the look of the watch, very classy looking, only trouble with watch is trying to read small dials, but for the price that is a sacrifice well worth it. I own 3 automatics so have a four watch watchwinder bought from Stauer, a good investment, looking forward to my next auto, will purchase from stauer.

Great Watch... Bands not the best!

This watch is a excellent product, I just recently took it off to await the chance to get a new band as the bands tend to fall apart due to sweat, I had two and they are basically gone now, But for 3 years, Not bad at all.. The watch runs about 15 minutes fast if I don''t take it off except to shower, If I leave it off at night the fast running disappears. I''m looking at another one now and then maybe I''ll get another band for this great watch.

I have had two of these Graves watches (the first disappearing under mysterious circumstances). I have received many compliments about the watch, and have been very cagey about where I obtained it. This watch is beautiful

I had seen Stauer watches in magazine ads before, and thought they looked pretty, but I collected nicer watches than that. I have learned through the years that you get what you pay for. I purchased a lower priced automatic once, and the movement was terrible. For that reason I always recoiled from buying a Stauer.I was given one for this past Christmas, and it has become mu most treasured piece. I wear automatic watches exclusively, and this one(My least expensive watch) is my dress watch that i protect and take especially good care of. No mowing the yard in this watch next summer. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because the complications can be changed too easily without my knowing because a button gets bumped. Time keeping appears to be perfect.

Better than expected

Just recieved my Graves 33 watch. I was first attracted to this watch by it''s strikingly beautiful photograph. I really wanted this watch, but I was hesitant to order due to my mild disappointment with some other jewelry items I received that were not as nice looking in person as they appeared in their photos. This watch was the OPPOSITE! It is even better looking in person as it was in the photograph. The movement is obviously superior, I love it!

Impressive little watch

For a reproduction this is a well done time piece. It does need to have the time set after about two weeks but this is not a worry because its needs are consistent. I could not make the screw down crown fasten. Called customer service and they told me the new ones do not screw down and the water resistance was not compromised. They were very helpful. I purchased mine from an outlet retail store and I called to registerr a warranty as they don''t sell to retail outlets. I have not figured that out yet, but in four month is has not needed any care. Even the band looks good.It is the most distinctive time peace I have ever owned and I often get comments about its antique look. Certainly it looks more expensive than the little out lay of cash to purchase it. Would recommend this watch to anyone.Watch Serial Number 133672

Graves 33 watch

Very handsome watch, even nicer upon receiving than I had anticipated. Looks a lot more expensive than it is. The leather band, however, is stiff and clunky. Meanwhile, if you''re a stickler for exact time, you''ll understand the very attactive price -- I''ve had mine just a few days and have noticed that the 33 name probably derives from the number of seconds it loses per day! Bottom line: Fun, inexpensive, not a serious timepiece -- that Casio at Walmart will keep much better time.

Great Classic Looking Watch

As a watch collector I was looking for a great looking timepiece that brought a classical look to the face. Stauer brings this to the market. My Graves arrived boxed and professional looking. I must say it is just as wonderful as the Movado, Rolex, and TAG, though much more of a value. This will be one of many on my purchase list!!!If you want a classical looking watch, with great quality and a great price, look for further as you have just found it!

Sharp-looking watch

I looked at this watch for quite awhile before deciding to buy it, which I did just before the start of 2010. The first watch that came was defective, so I returned it for an exchange. The second watch arrived after a delay (due to using Stauer''s pre-paid shipping label, which takes a bit of time, and then their 7-10 business day processing period). That watch worked for all of 20 minutes before the second hand refused to move anymore, even when the watch was wound. I called Customer Service to ask whether I should return it for an exchange, or just give up and request a credit. The Customer Service person was very nice and helpful, and I eventually requested another exchange. I Then paid myself to ship it back US Priority Mail, to speed up the process. The third watch arrived and has been fine. It is everything I hoped it would be. I get more compliments on it from people than I do on my higher-end watches. I am planning to purchase a notched replacement band, so I have it when the time comes to replace it.One thing that I wanted to note is that my watch does not have a screw-down crown. All of the literature on it says it does, and one or more reviews notes a screw-down crown. Many of my other watches have screw-down crowns, so I''m no stranger to how they work. There simply is not one on this watch, which makes me worry whether or not it is really water-resistant to 5 atmospheres.Despite my ordeal in getting a watch that works, I have nothing but positive things to say about Stauer''s Customer Service, their return/exchange processes, and how satisfied I am with the watch itself. I already have my eyes on a few other watches from them!

I have had the watch for well over a year, but it continually stops running within a few hours of my taking it off. Great Watch, Not Perfect

My wife purchased the Graves ''33 watch last year for our anniversary. I had been eying the watch for a few months prior so it was a great surprise. The only two dissapointments were on the case back. The case back is not clear as it is advertised on the image and highlights part of the website and also the case back has a "CHINA" stamp on it. Other than that I do get plenty of compliments everyday.

first the bad,the number dials are a little small hard to read...but thats my problem not a problem of the watch......buttons are sensitive you can accidentley change months, dates but the day/night dial is finenot sure about the accuracy of the time seems ok. now the good nice retro lookfeels solid...the company stauer seems good meesage to all men about to get engaged...why do the women get a engagement ring and the guys nothing??? my fiancee agrees with me guys should get something too and I didn''t want a ring I decided on a watch...graves 33 but I finding other watches I like here just ordered the Casablanca to wear at work and the graves when not at work.

Beautiful!

This is a very classy-looking watch! The dial/face is a lighter off-white/yellow color than the photo might suggest, which I''m actually quite pleased with and it makes it look older than it really is. Some might think that the caseback is clear, but a keen eye will notice that the case is actually opened in the 2nd photograph, so I wasn''t surprised when I saw a solid back on the watch when it arrived. I have been wearing the watch since yesterday evening and as of this morning, I still haven''t accidentally bumped any of the buttons that set the subdials. I even wore the watch as I slept last night and I''m happy to report that the subdials are still correct. The second hand isn''t as smooth as the 28,800 bph frequency that I''m used to on a couple of my higher-end watches, but this wasn''t surprising and I''m still happy with the very "quick-ticking" movement. The movement itself is an asian movement, but experience tells me that it should still be reliable. After 15 hours of setting the exact time, the watch is running 8 seconds fast, but this is expected of most automatic movements. The crown is a screw-down type. (You don''t just pull it out to set the time.) Overall, I''m very happy with the watch and I think I''ll find myself wearing it every day. My only complaint is minor and can be resolved easily; the 2nd leather "ring" that holds the excess leather band is a little scratchy on the skin due to a little excess material that needs to be trimmed off.

Loved the watch - but...

I purchased one of these watches about three years ago and loved it. It kept great time, and was not as bulky as the Seiko it had replaced on my wrist. After a little over a year, however, the watch face became detatched and bound up against the hands. Looking on the internet, I found others have had the same issue with the ''33 Graves. Bottom line, it is a beautiful watch, but I would not recommend anyone using it for daily wear.

Elegant Simplicity

I''ve received quite a number of compliments everytime I wear this watch. It''s blend of classical old world charm with modern mechanism is a great combination at an unbeatable price. My only complaint is with the date settings. These do not lock down when the crown is depressed in "lock" mode. As a result, date can accidentally be changed inadvertently.Otherwise, a terrific buy. I highly recommend it.

Good Watch-But

I enjoy the watch my wife bought me. I wanted it for the style. There it comes through. It does have a couple of shortcommings that I have learned to live through. Others talk about the self winding feature keeping the watch wound for one or two days. Well, with mine, if I don''t give it a good shaking before going to bed it may be dead by morning. Most likely to happen while on vacation when I sleep more. If it is left alone for ten hours, it is dead. The other thing is that the buttons that control the small dials are live at all times. I constantly am having the wrong Month shown because of my pants pocket pushing the button when I reach into my pocket. I would like to have had the buttons locked with the stem mechanization that locks the time set. Mine also looses a bit of time every couple of days and has to be reset.

Extremely Happy

I was hesitant at first to purchase this watch because I had only seen it in a magazine ad. and on the Stauer web site. It looked great from the picture, but usually when you get the product your disappointed. Let me tell you...when I opened up the box, I could not believe what I was looking at. Absolutely beautiful. Gorgeous. I was stunned. This watch is amazing. I have had it know for a week and it keeps time great (just a few seconds off). Even the leather band is thick and high quality. I have not worn another watch since I got this and it gets better looking every day. If you like the style and it looks good to you in the picture...purchase it. It will look 1,000 times better when you get it in person. I am thrilled with it.

Very Cool Watch

This watch is clearly an excellent value. It has a very high end appearance that drawn compliments when shown to others. The number of functions is amazing, but it isn''t overwhelming in size or weight. Mine ahs kept time perfectly. THe only downside for me is that reading the smaller dial functions is a bit difficult in other than full light, and the thick band, while very confortable when the watch is on, is a bit more difficult to fix than I''m normally used to. But these are minor downsides to a really nice watch. It has to be recommended as a top value piece.

Nice Timepiece

I received the "Graves 33" today and my initial reaction was not pleasing which was my fault for not reading the "Highlights" more closely. I would love to see an optional sapphire crystal back (Exhibition Back)added to this product for an optional fee, so the watch movement is visible. Even though the movement is "Made in China" it is still worth exposing. Would I buy another Stauer Timepiece; yes! I love the look and feel that the piece has on my wrist. The price is very pleasing and the timepiece is beautiful! Please consider the exhibition back as an optional feature for this timepiece.

Best Watch In Its Price Range.

The Graves 33 is a great watch. Before purchasing this one, I reviewed many other watches from Stauer and other companies. Other watches in the price range do not compare to the Graves 33. It is accurate, loaded with features and, easy to set and read. The watch looks as though it should cost at least $1,000.00. However, had I designed the Graves 33, I would have given it luminous hands so that the time could be read in the dark. I give it 5 stars for now. When Stauer adds luminous hands, I will bump my rating of it up to 6 stars.

Exquisite Timepiece

I ordered this unit for "free" using a $100 gift coupon from an earlier Stauer purchase. I only paid $20 or so in shipping. I was VERY pleasantly surprised when I opened the box and saw that this unit was considerably smaller than I was expecting. Frankly, I was prepared for a watch with so many complications to be large and cumbersome... almost pocket watch sized. I have smaller hands and wrists and it fits wonderfully. The Graves ''33 is one of the most artfully crafted watches I have ever owned and is a pleasure to wear and look at... almost hypnotically beautiful in it''s classic lines. It keeps great time so far, and the complications are all in good order. The band is quite thick and takes some breaking in, but it is very sturdy and shouldn''t need replacing for a long time. The only downside is that the watch DOES NOT have an exhibition back as photos on web site might suggest. Otherwise, this watch instantly became my favorite, and suits my vintage tastes. Magnificent job, Stauer! You have earned my loyalty as a customer!

re:Stauer Graves issues

I received this watch for Christmas in 2005. It worked well and still does, except that the month reset button does not work, nor does the month calendar dial advance as it should. It is called a Steinhausen, but was purchased through Stauer, and has nearly the exact appearance as what is being sold now as the Graves model. I have attempted to have this watch repaired, and have yet to find a watch repair shop that can do this job(I have contacted six, including two in metropolitan areas).I was told by the help desk at Stauer that I would not be able to exchange the piece, as it had been purchased just outside of warranty expiration(1 year), and that even if I sent the piece back to them, that they could not repair it, as the company that made this watch was no longer serving Stauer. To add insult to injury, the''help desk''at Stauer would not provide me with the contact information to contact the company directly so that I could get repairs effected directly(at my own cost!).I did not feel comfortable throwing good money after bad by ordering another watch.(Fool me once, shame on you...) As far as Stauer watches go, I say ''caveat emptor'', but their jewelry looks very nice...

Like no other watch I''ve worn...

I just bought this thing and I can''t stop looking at it. You have to understand, I contented myself with fairly boring, cheap watches my whole life. After seeing a Stauer ad, I broke down and started browsing, and on a lark I ordered the Graves 33 as I''ve always wanted a watch of similar type and could never justify spending a minimum of $400 for one. Was I surprised when it arrived. It''s extremely classy in appearance and makes me feel like my wrist is overdressed at work. So, of course, I''ve just ordered two more Stauers and will probably not stop there. This watch is not running fast and was easy to set up. Seems VERY solid and well made, and reflects the fact that Chinese manufacturing has made great strides given the movement is made there. Couldn''t be happier. Since getting the time from my cell phone is effortless, So if I want a watch I want it to look good AND be durable. I think this works on both counts. I may have a new addiction to a certain watch maker''s products.

My Favorite Watch

My Graves ''33 watch arrived quickly, and I was VERY pleasantly surprised to find that it was smaller than I was expecting... making it easy to fit under shirt sleeves and suit jackets. It is beautifully crafted and functions perfectly. The band is only slightly stiff but is very strong. I wear this watch almost daily, and the stainless case has remained very shiny, and the mineral crystal shows no scratches at all (even though I have banged it up it a few times). The only disappointment is that it does not have an exhibition back as the photos might suggest. The secondary numeral dial was slightly loose on arrival, but righted itself, so I did not need to send it in for replacement. And yes, I have accidentally pushed some of the setting buttons on occasion, but that can''t be helped. I have received very warm compliments on the Graves ''33, and have great pride of ownership. Great job Stauer!

I Did My Homework

I read all that I could find on the Graves. I continued to read the reviews and examine the face of the watch. I know, it was only $99 but I watch my money very tightly. I have finally broken down and gave this watch to myself for Christmas. I feel as though I have just discovered gold. At 65 at feel like a kid with the greatest new today. Thank you all so much. This was my first watch from Stauer but most certainly not my last.

Throw out a slice of bread, get a loaf back

I sent my nephew a Dashtronic after seeing it in the N.G. magazine. He loves it, and so for my 50th he sent me the Graves 33. He didn''t know I have been admiring this particular watch, so it was a pleasant surprise. The watch loses a second every hour, but looks great, and I can''t help showing it off to friends (who are quite impressed.) Unfortunately it is easy to bump one of the adjustment buttons and advance the date or the month. The case is large, being an Automatic, but at least I don''t have to buy batteries. Once the watch is wound, it runs for longer that 24 hrs., even when left in a drawer.

the detailing is exquisite

I thought the last thing I needed was another watch but when I saw the Graves ''33 I knew I had to have one. When it arrived I was so hoping that it was as detailed as it appeared in the photographs and I was not disappointed. What a beauty. the contrast of the ivory dial with the black Roman numerals, the delicacy of the sweep second hand, the sun, moon and the tiny names and numbers on the interior dials are exquisitely detailed and I love the color and look of the burgundy alligator band. The watch keeps very accurate time and is still running even when left off my wrist over night. I could not be more pleased with my purchase and have every intention of beginning a small collection of these wonderful timepieces.

watch

I have the triple-date moon phase model. Beautiful piece. When i first got it, it was an unacceptable two minutes a day fast. When my Rolex needed cleaning, my watchmaker timed the Stauer for free. Guess what. It is now just as accurate as the newly cleaned Rolex. It can''t be losing more than a few seconds a day, which is as good as it gets for automatics.

My favorite Stauer

When I first saw this watch in an ad, I thought it was the strangest thing I''d ever seen. I bought another watch, from another ad. When I got the catalog, I kept going back to that ''ugly watch''. After a few weeks, it started to grow on me. So much so, that I bought one. I tell you, it is my favorite Stauer watch, and it now looks to me like the most beautiful watch in the world! This watch sees 24/7 use. Being very nearsighted, I even wear it to bed. The mechanicals are bulletproof. Mowing the lawn, changing sparkplugs, dining out, working in a machine shop, this watch really taked it all in stride. The only detractioin (and not for myself), is the sub-dials are TINY! If you are far-sighted at all, you may never know what these dials are reading. Thanks, Stauer!

A little bigger than I liked

This watch is thicker and larger than I''m used to. I own several Stauer watches, bought the first from an airplane magazine ad. I would love to get an automatic watch thats thin and mid size or as they are somtimes referred to unisex. I have small wrist and the band wrapped around almost back to the watch case again. I had to use the last hole on the strap and it was still a bit loose. But as far as workmanship, and value go I don''t know of any watch manufacturer that beats Stauer, Period!

I purchased my Stauer Grave''s 33 nearly 3 yrs.ago.I also own another Stauer automatic and it too runs very nicely. In fact I recieve compliments nearly everytime I wear either watches. I work in a clinic where patients are in eye level with my watches and often I see my patients staring at my watches as their seated while I check the vitals. Some of them I notice wear watches that are obviously expensive and they inquire about mine, I keep the secret to myself and let ''em believe I dropped a coin for them.

Head turning watch

I bought mine from "Shop NBC" for $79 and at first I thought something was wrong with it and was about to send it back because it kept stopping, but I was still use to watches with batteries. I read a few reviews about having a "automatic" watch and realized that I needed to wear it for it to continue working. With that knowledge, it''s working perfectly now and I wear it every day. I''ve been wearing it daily for almost a month now and I haven''e had any more problems with it not keeping correct time or stopping. it''s a great watch and a real conversation starter.

Amazing Watch

This is the first Stauer watch that I have purchased, and to put it mildly, I am thoroughly impressed. I was able to catch it at the right time during one of Stauer’s 24 hour sales am I am very happy that I took advantage of it. The watch has lived up to my expectations and then some. When I opened the packaging to find a gorgeous burgundy band, I was instantly enthralled. The band of the watch already had a rounded fit to it making it very comfortable to wear. I was even more impressed with the finely crafted detail and obvious quality of the watch face. It looks exactly as advertised, if not better! I was initially concerned with prior reviews saying that it is too easy to change the setting of the watch by accidently hitting the buttons; I haven’t found this to be the case. This watch is fascinating. Even if I was receiving this as a gift, I would be able to tell just by the quality of the packaging, that I am about to receive an amazing gift. When I need to purchase another watch for myself or someone else in the future, I will be purchasing from Stauer.

I have quite a few watches. Some others from Stauer and a number of Citizen watches. This is the best once I figured out the 4 small circles. I''m 69 so tiny print is hard. But a magnifier taught me what was in each circle so I know what is going on. I recommend it.

Stunning

OK... here goes. After a couple of months research reading all the reviews I could find -- good and bad (along with horror stories about losing time, hands falling off, etc.) I decided that because I have a phone that tells me exactly what time it is, I would go ahead and purchase this watch for no other reason than appearance sake in photographs and prepare for the worst when it arrived. First, let me say that the photos do not do this watch justice. The one word I would use to describe this watch is "understatement". This is truly a beautiful piece of engineering. The attention to detail is amazing to say the least. The (mineral) crystal is slightly convex which lends an authentic and interesting look to the watch and refracts sunlight in an occasionally prismatic way on the enameled antique white face. Roman numerals are slightly raised and appear to be more authentically hand painted than embossed. The 4:00 position is correctly labeled "IV", not "IIII" as is the case with many other (and much more expensive) watches. Hands are Brequet style (lovely detail) and indexed perfectly without any noticeable slop when adjusting. There are four complications that function perfectly and are slightly recessed and decorated with a very thin goldtone accent around the perimeter which is an especially noticeable and beautiful feature in bright lighting. "Moonphase" complication is actually an "AM/PM" indicator and is set automatically while setting time of day. Despite my reading of reviews complaining of problems with pushers being incorrectly reset because of everyday wrist motion, while it may indeed be possible, I have had no problems as of this writing. Albeit a Chinese movement and I have no idea of the actual specs, the second hand moves with the precision of a Swiss grade high BPH movement you would expect to see in a much more expensive piece.Shipping was fast and worry-free via UPS with tracking number. Packaging is a little disappointing considering the $24.95 shipping charge. Stauer uses a brown paper bubble mailer to ship this unit, which may be the reason for some of the reviews complaining of various failures such as hands falling off, etc. but mine seems to be here intact without any visible defect. I will update this review periodically as I gain more experience with this watch.

I love this watch!

There are only two problems with this watch. One: the second keeper on the band wears out in about two years and you have to replace the entire band. Two: it is very easy to accidentally bump the date and day of the week buttons, though this hasn''t been really much of a problem for me.This is a beautiful timepiece and I love the self-winding feature. I bought mine when it was only $99, but I would pay today''s price in a heartbeat. This is the watch I wear to work and I have gotten many complements on it. It''s appropriate for any occasion and it keeps very good time.Thank you Stauer, for giving us an affordable piece of history.

Great Watch

I had my Stauer watch since 2003 I have the 1920''s look, everyone who has seen it loves it, it looks very much to the graves 33 but my date shows the number of the day instead of the round look for the date. I later changed the band to a silver band with pins I love it, just got it repaired for the first time this year,I will be happy to buy another one

Good but not perfict

This watch is very good. It keeps perfect time. But, a shirt sleeve or a coat sleeve will change the month and date. It never has the correct date or month. The day of the week can change but not as easily. It needs something to prevent this problem,

Retrotastic

I bought this watch years ago and it deserves a review. This retro watch is indeed a beauty. I have heard the complaints, however, I do not have a problem with my watch. What I want to say is Stauer has a Merlot version of this watch to die for. My wife loves it and the watch could indeed be worn by men or women and the new color combinations rock. I hope to see them soon in the future catalogs. I have a collection of watches and wear this one when I want to dress up for an event or date with my wife. If you have a problem send it back to Stauer and they will take care of you as a customer. Be sure to wear any watch a few weeks to find out if you can see any quirks or problems. Enjoy!

Stunning

This watch is awesome! It is extremely attractive. In fact, I am complimented on this watch nearly every day I wear it. I saw other reviews that said the watch runs a bit fast but I have not experienced this. However, I will concur with the reviewers who said that they accidentally change their month and day settings. The complications are always live so occasionally I bump them and inadvertently change the date and month settings. That is a minor inconvenience and really the only complaint I have about this watch. I had been admiring this watch on the web site for a few weeks before I bought it and I can say that it is even more stunning than pictured here. Definitely not my last Stauer.
