No Bones About It

A trip to an antique book store led us to find one of the earliest designs of the sought after skeleton timepiece. With a 233-year-old design, Stauer has brought back the past in the intriguing old world geometry of the Stauer 1779 Skeleton. See right through to the precision parts and hand assembled movement and into the heart of the unique timepiece. It’s like seeing an X-Ray inside the handsome gold filled case.

Beauty is only skin deep but the Engineering Goes Right to the Bone. Intelligent Collectors of vintage mechanical watches have grown bored with mass produced quartz movements. Like fine antique car collectors, they look for authenticity, but they also want practicality from their tiny machines. Inspired by a rare museum piece dating to 1779, we engineered this classic with $31,000,000 worth of precise Swiss built machinery to create the intricate gears and levers. So the historians are thrilled with the authenticity and the demanding engineers are quite impressed with the technical performance.

See All the Way Through. The crystal on the front and the see through exhibition back allow you to observe the gold-finished mainspring, escapement, balance wheel and many of the 17 rubies work in harmony. The balance wheel oscillates at 21,600 times per hour for superb accuracy. The crocodile embossed leather strap adjusts from 6 ½" to 9" so it will fit practically any wrist. So give it a little wind and the gears roar to life.

We took the timepiece to George Thomas, a noted historian and watch restorer for major museums, and he dissected the 110 parts of the vintage movement. He gave the "1779" top reviews. "It is possible to build it better than the original, and your new skeleton requires so little maintenance." When we shared the price with him, George was stunned. He said that no other luxury skeleton can be had for under $1000. But we pour our money into the watch construction, not into sponsoring yacht races and polo matches. So you can wear a piece of watch making history and still keep most of your money in your pocket, not on your wrist.

I loved this watch before I recieved it!

I saw an advertisement for this watch and immediately decided I had to have the watch, and showing the picture to my wife got the same reaction. Having now worn our watches for over a month I am very impressed by the beautiful design and clear plates on front and back. It is a shame in this digital age that more people don''t realize that having a watch that needs to be wound (therefore no batteries) can be both interesting and economical. I just didn''t expect it to be a great watch too? Thanks Stauer!

amazing piece!

I am a college student and am in the hobby of watch collecting. As I''m sure you are aware college students don''t make much money but this watch provided me the opportunity to buy a beautiful classically styled piece that left most of my money in my pocket. I also love the fact that it has to be wound, it keeps time perfectly and is a nice addition to my collection. I am even considering throwing out convention and simply collecting only Stauer watches!

WOW!!! Merry Christmas to me!

Like A''s review above me I loved this watch before it arrived. Saw it in an ad and when my Mom asked me for the 43''rd year in a row what I wanted for Christmas, I had THE answer- that Stauer Skeleton watch I saw. My only worry was that it would be like a hamburger ad- so pretty until the real thing is given to you. NOT TO WORRY! This is the real deal. Even better looking than the AD. I am a watch buff and this thing is bliss. I have the auto wind one...

Wearable, mechanical artwork

Over the last couple of years, my wife gifted me with two Stauer watches, and this one is my favorite. Why? The works, of course. As a mechanical engineer, I have an appreciation for all things mechanical, and this watch is a delight with all the polished and brushed metal movement elements. Quartz watches are so dull - I have a cell phone, so I don''t really need to wear a watch to know what time it is. The skeleton watch, however, is a wearable, mechanical work of art. I receive lots of compliments on this watch from both women and men who aren''t engineers. I''m eagerly waiting for Stauer to offer another skeleton watch to add to my wearable, mechanical art collection.

More than impressive.

I just got this watch for Christmas and it looks better on your wrist than in the pictures on the website. I have received numerous compliments and enjoy wearing it almost as much as my older Timex Ironman watch that I wear for school.

Stylish, Affordable, Unique

The watch was a gift from my sister. We saw it at a fundraiser ( silent auction ) and made a bid. Managed to get a great price and I''m absolutely thrilled. I''m hard on watch''s and getting a beautiful time piece like the skeleton puts the old timex to shame. The challenge will be to keep it as a dress watch and not wear it dayly. Looks great, feels good, and adds a little style to a weary wrist.

Beautiful and Interesting

As watches go $99 isn''t a lot of money (I also have a very nice Movado.) So I was a little concerned that it might not be suitable for my work in public contact, but my concern was unfounded. This watch is a fascinating and attractive piece, and appears well-made. I like mechanical things so I especially enjoy looking at this watch. Since I received it 6 weeks ago I''ve worn it almost daily. It''s a bunch of fun.

Late Christmas for myself

Just got my 1779 last week. Very pleased, nicer than I thought it would be. Watch''s are about the only jewelry I wear. This has the look of an old expensive wristwatch, but cost much less. The quality is great. It is larger than I expected, but I have small wrists and hands for a guy. Shipping was really fast, and I only paid for the basic. I will order another. Probably the Graves 33.

Love it!!!

I have seen the advertisement from Stauer in my World War II magazine for a while now and always comment to myself how nice the watches are. I finally went to the web site and decided on this watch and absolutely love it. I''m already looking at another one to use as a dress watch.

+18 months and still great

I purchased this watch in 2007, during that time, I''ve been through busy streets of New Orleans, frigid winds of Chicago and exposed to the sea air in Hawaii. This watch is still as beautiful and accurate as the day it arrived in the mail. I''ve received many compliments from a lot of people and they were amazed at the price I paid it for. A working art piece that will be appreciated for a very long time. Even the ticking, sounds like music to my ears.

Elegant Watch

Just received my 2nd Stauer and I am just as pleased as the first. This watch looks great and even feels good to hold. I like the old fashioned wind for a change (still no batteries!)Keeps very accurate time so far. Great buy...I will be adding more Stauers in the future.

I bought this watch a month ago and not only do I like it, but also other people admire it give me complements for it. Watching the mechanics inside the watch is fascinating and wonderful and it has the feel of a high quality piece.

I may need to buy the automatic too

I love this watch. It is accurate, fascinating, and is attactive enough to wear on important occasions. The skeleton style also makes it a good badge of office for a scientist. I would expect that deists would also like this particular watch since they describe God as the the great watchmaker who created the universe, wound it up, and has now left it to run by itself. I bought the non-automatic version so the mechanism would be more visible, but now I may need to buy an automatic skeleton too. I like this watch so much that I bought the ladies version for my wife. When we feel like being cute in public, we wear our matching skeleton watches.

Great watch at a great price

I bought this handsome, beautifully crafted watch as a gift for my dad for Fathers Day. As soon as I oppened the box, I just knew that he would love it. I have purchased many watches from Stauer in the past, all of them works of art. This one is no different. I have a Stauer Gold Vendage on its way now, and I have no doubt that it will be just as beautiful as every piece of jewelry this company produces. I will purchase from them many more times in the future, and I have proudly recomended Stauer to all my co-workers in the military.

Gorgeous Watch

I just got the watch in the mail, it''s a beautiful piece. The watch itself is a bit thicker than I had expected, a bit thicker than my automatic normal-face chronograph, but it''s to be expected with a manual watch... not cumbersome or anything. Definitely a nice piece, hard not to stare at the movement when you''re checking the time! Also, the leather band is much higher quality than I had expected.

Very Impressive

I am a Collector of watches & I will say this is the most interesting I have. I do have some expensive watches, but this one is a WINNER!!!!!Im not a large watch type person, so I find the size & also the accuracy are great. Because of this I will be purchasing other Stauer watches. I also have the New York to Paris, also a nice watch. You people carry very nice time pieces.

Mechanic Approves

My wife got it for me and insisted I wear it at work. I was afraid I would beat it up while working on airplanes, but the only thing to show wear after two years is the wristband. Somehow, the watch still looks great after constant abuse. I plan to upgrade the wristband at a jeweler, which will probably cost more than the watch.

Absolutely Amazing

I saw this watch in a magazine at 2 o''clock in the morning... I bought it on the spot. Thanks to Stauer and the 1779 Skeleton, I have started a collection (though I am a poor college student so it is 4 watches). This watch kept me entertained during my final year of high school; I could stare at the gears and construction all day! Everyone who laid eyes on this watch was in awe; in fact, I had to take it off when entering the presence of children because they couldn''t focus on my words after seeing it (by children I mean anyone under 40). Unfortunately, it was stolen from me so I replaced it with the Graves ''33. I will buy it again when I have the money. I don''t blame the thief, he has good taste!

I got my skeleton today and it looks 10x''s better than the picture that they showed in the catalogue. I got it for christmas and I think this watch will go the distance for me. I plan on buying more watches from stauer. I already have the Noire. Stauer is a great company and i would recommend this watch AND the company to anyone who wants great luxery items for low prices.

Impressive Timepiece

This watch is an incredible value! I can''t believe how beautiful it is. I am impressed with the design, style, quality of craftsmanship, and the comfortable fit. The leather strap is a bit thick but I think it will wear well and it looks very rich. This is so much fun to wear as a refreshing change from my traditional watches. Quite the oxymoron hey? It does look like an heirloom piece and it is mesmerizing. I really enjoy skeleton watches. They are definitely conversation pieces. This watch is definitely one of the better skeleton designs. LOVE IT!!!!!!!

Received your package today. The watch is everything I hoped for and more. Your advertisement really should have mentioned the little faux sapphire embedded at the top of the winding mechanism. That was an added treat - as well as the $20 discount coupons.

MY FUN WATCH

This is the watch I wear when I''m out to have fun. I wear it to the local pub, out riding my bicycle through the French Quarter or the motorcycle on the open road. It sometimes catches someone''s eye and when it does I usually must take it off and let someone watch my watch for a while! It is usually someone who loves fine machinery, but has never seen the inner workings of a mechanical watch befor. Very accurate, it seems to gain about 1 min. per week. While the automatics rotate on their auto winder, it gets a few seconds of love every morning to keep it wound.

Gift to myself

I have seen Stauer ads in magazines and always thought the watches looked very nice. So, I decided to treat myself to one.Everything about the watch appears well made and it is beautiful. I feel like I am wearing a fine muesum piece on my wrist. I do have one warning... You''ll find yourself wasting a lot time watching the little gears move!I highly recommend the watch.

Classy Watch!

A few years ago I was working in a jewelery store myself and a client walked in with this watch on his wrist. It immediately caught my eye and we ended up talking about it for a good 15 minutes. He referred me to this website and two years later, a friend bought it for me for an anniversary gift. Now every one is spotting this beautiful watch on my wrist and I even have at least one other friend who will be buying one. I''ve had this watch for months now and the intricacy of the mechanism still fascinates me. Also, the glass cover is tough and has resisted what would have scratched many of my past watches. A must for watch lovers!

Worth the wait

I''m picky about the watches I wear, nothing too delicate, too girly, too little...I like a good wind up but have a budget. Roman numerals and a second hand are a must as is a good quality leather strap. I waited...saw beautiful manual watches but they were for men. My husband got the Stauer catalog in the mail and there it was...the ladies Skeleton watch...recieved it for my birthday. It''s more beautiful on than the photo reveals, and I''ve gotten more compliments with this watch, most of them from men. Well done, Stauer! Bravo!

A Little Bit of Nastalgia

When I first saw this watch, I had been looking for a Skeleton Watch for some time. I found yours by accident on the internet. This is exactly the kind of timepiece I was seeking. The quality took me back to my first watch that my mother gave me when I was a youth in the 1940"s. I had forgotten how unique it was to manually wind a watch again. The time piece keeps perfect time and the commentys are unbelievable. Most say, "Where did you find this and can I afford it? Great find. I am very pleased. I wear it every day instead of my $300 Seiko. I have many watches, but this one is perfrect. It is exactly as described in your advertisement. Harry''s choice!

Wonderful Watch

I purchased this watch a 16th birthday gift for myself back in September, and it''s been a joy ever since. I wear it almost daily, and the only wear on it is on the band, and it''s only slight. The watch itself runs tirelessly, and will actually run for several days after being wound fully, although I normally wind it in the morning + evening. It''s a beautiful watch and I''ve received many compliments on it. I need a watch at the school I go to, since the clocks are rather haphazardly placed in rooms and frequently display the wrong times- and I am very glad I picked this watch to be my timepiece.

Can you say perfect! I love this watch! Look at it, you can see straight through it.The details are awesome, all the little gears and springs not to mention the rubies. Everyone that sees it asks if they can have a closer look. Then of coarse, they want to know how to get one like it. I don''t mind handing them a catalog, I keep one with me in the car for just this reason. The watch band is durable, and its the perfect size. Great job Stauer! My amazing watch!

I''d seen ads for this watch in several different magazines. I really liked the way it looked, so I finally ordered one. I''m not a watch guy, but, damn! This watch is fabulous. I had a problem with the winding. It would run but then stop. I sent it back in the prepaid return envelope. I got my replacement and zero problems. My coworkers have seen my watch and have given me grief over wearing such an expensive timepiece. It was rumored I spent hundreds of dollars on my "baller" watch. And with the quality and look, it''s no surprise they thought it was way more expensive. Ha ha.

My first and Favorite

The 1779 was my first Stauer purchase and was the reason I returned for more watches and other items.I was especially impressed with their service. When the original watch arrived with a tiny nick in the case, they replaced it immediately with no hassle and at no expense to myself! These folks are no nonsense.I love the Skeleton''s classic look and the view of its internal workings. I only wish it had a sweep second hand, to make the 1779 that much more exciting.

So Far, So Good. Everyone wants a look.

I''ve had this watch for several months now and it has been great as a watch and an eye catcher. People love to watch the movement inside. I still sometimes take the watch off so I can watch it, front and back. It was amazing from the day I got it. It was nicely packed in a nice show box within a sleeve. Watching it come to life as I first wound it was amazing. It has only stopped a couple of times since I''ve had it. It will run almost two days on one winding. The winding stem and setting seem to be very solid. The movement is Chinese, but hey, it works and is quite artful for $99.00. I''m looking forward to purchasing some more watches. You need to look and catch them on sale. As far as accuracy, this watch gains about a minute every three or four days if I keep it wound. Not bad for a fully mechanical watch of this price.

As one who makes his own gears for spring powered automata, I wanted a nice looking skeleton watch which gave a nice gear display. This watch is no disappointment. Mechanical Inner Workings

With my Platinum Club coupon and 10% off member price I purchased this watch for about 40 dollars and that is one hell of a deal. It is well worth joining the club. The watch itself is a smaller profile and gold toned with a dark brown alligator embossed leather strap and stainless steel windowed back. You can see the time piece clock work from both the front and back of the watch casing. This is a mechanical watch and you wind it to give it the spring loaded energy to run the watch. I enjoy watching the moving gears which are clearly visible. The watch face uses roman numerals with 15, 30, 40, and 60 arabic marks at the 3, 6, 9, and 12 o''clock positions.

Excellent, Beautiful & Simple

A beautiful timepiece, excellent workmanship and finish, outside and in, the latter visible from both front and back. This is my second skeleton watch, I broke the wind knob at the shaft on the first one handling it too roughly perhaps, I have been more careful with this one, and it works just fine. If wound at the same time daily this watch gives accuracy of gain/loss of 20 to 30 seconds per day which is within the specs of mechanical non-premium timepiece. Two minor negatives: The strap in not "Genuine leather" as claimed. C''mon people, who are you kidding! It feels stiff and slippery to the touch, much like plastic and much unlike leather. And the two strap rings clearly display the synthetic fabric backing, rendering this issue a closed case. Frankly, I do not believe this is any setback for Stauer. The majority of consumers realize that "crocodile embossed leather strap" is a claim too good to be true. I personally will gladly purchase a truly genuine crocodile leather strap for hundreds of dollars more, and attach it to this watch. The second minor negative is the siver image of a smithy on the back glass. It gains nothing and unnecessarily detracts from the beautiful view of the inner workings. I can''t wait for Stauer to get rid of this feature to buy another skeleton watch. In summary: Excellent products overall ; Some quality shortcuts, totally understandable within the price range.

After a Year

The watch is superb. I wind and reset it daily - it does lose a minute or two a day, but it''s a manual wind so that is unimportantThe band did not last - it was poorly made. I replaced it with a Speidel band and together they look wonderful. I''d buy it again

Very Nice!

I got this watch a few weeks ago and I am very pleased. There is something very appealing about a quality manual wind watch. This watch is very handsome and the exposed mechanics really catch the eye. However, I will say I would like to have seen a little more contrast in the color of the internal components, they are mostly gold colored. But all in all, a great and classic watch for an unbeatable price. Not my first Stauer, and definitely not my last!

Skeleton Watch

This watch is very beautiful but has some issues. The hands are hard to see with such a busy background and the difference between the minute and hour hand are small so in dimly lit areas it''s hard to tell which is which. (Is it 8:45 or 9:40?). I have many watches from high end, automatics, manual wind and battery powered quartz from various manufacturers but this watch is very thick for just being a manual wind and having two hands. The only watch I own that is thicker is the Midnight Meisterzeit (think hockey puck). It is also 2 to 3 minutes fast every 2 days - so much for all the jewels. I rate this average.
