Red garnets have a long history, but modern gem buyers can pick from a rich palette of garnet colors: greens, oranges, pinkish oranges, deeply saturated purplish reds, and even some blues. This stunning shade of grape garnet was just discovered in 2015 in Mozambique. The purple stunner is actually rhodolite garnet, a mixed garnet crystal of almandine and pyrope garnet. What makes this find so intriguing is that this vivid purple is not normally seen in rhodolite and is what gives this newest find its sweet name.
Our vendor says these garnets are the purest purple color they have ever seen – yet because mining on this stone is on a smaller scale, supply on this new discovery is extremely limited. Most rough stones available have already been cut and there are only a few vendors who have access to the gems. Garnet is truly a stone with a rainbow of colors and the newest vivid purple is an exotic and exciting addition.
