Italys textile secret, straight from Lake Comos shores
Italian-made scarves, light & airy in fresh spring colors
Lake Como often lures visitors with its seductive landscape of sapphire-colored water and breathtaking mountain peaks, the shores lined with fig, olive and oleander trees. Poet Henry Longfellow wrote of Lake Como, “I ask myself, is this a dream? Will it all vanish into air? Is there a land of such supreme and perfect beauty anywhere?”
With its picturesque cafes, endless views and stately villas, it’s not hard to understand why Lake Como is the jewel of Italy’s lake region. But little-known to those outside the fashion industry, Como, rather than Milan, is the best place to source textiles in Italy. Since the turn of the century, Como, a 2,000-year-old Roman town on the southwestern shore of the lake of the same name, has been the center of Italy’s textile industry.
In the sixth century silkworms were smuggled out of China in bamboo canes and brought to the eastern Mediterranean by two Persian merchants disguised as priests. By the 16th and 17th centuries Milan assumed prominence as both the Italian and European silk capital, and toward the turn of the century Como became the country’s largest producer. Today, designers from virtually every fine house rely on fabric from Como.
We traveled to Como to meet the Pezzia family, who has been creating beautiful scarves since 1966. With a profound attention to quality and design, founders Franco and Luigia combine state of the art technology with an artisan touch. Tied, twisted, looped, folded, rolled— these scarves lend themselves to endless transformations, no matter the season. Throw one on and you are instantly the epitome of casual elegance— just like Como’s ethereal landscape. 100% made in Italy, our Como scarves are your own personal ticket to Italian excellence.
