In the 16th century, Martin Luther looked up from the forest and saw the stars in the night sky twinkling through the branches of an evergreen tree. He decided to recreate that look at home by decorating his tree with candles. The tradition took root slowly until, in 1846, word spread around London that the popular Queen Victoria had a decorated Christmas tree. The ensuing excitement spread around the world, and the festive joy of the brightly decorated tree is still with us today.
