Lightning Strikes Twice
Enjoy two of the greatest finds of the last century
Tanzanite was first discovered when a bolt of lightning set the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro ablaze, revealing the sparkling violet-blue of Tanzanite below the surface. Tanzanite is no ordinary gemstone. Its beautiful violet blue color is irresistible, mimicking a gorgeous mixture of the best sapphire, amethyst and blue topaz. When it was first found, Henry Platt, president and chairman of Tiffany & Co., called it “the most important gemstone discovery in over 2,000 years.”
Tsavorite is a stunning green gem that was discovered by accident in 1967 when Scottish gemologist Campbell Bridges was charged by a buffalo in Africa. Bridges dodged the animal by diving into a gully and noticed striking green stones glinting in the sunlight. His discovery was named by Henry Platt after Tsavo Game Reserve in Kenya, the area of its discovery.
