As long as man has traded goods, gemstones have been in high demand. For millennia, merchants have traveled the globe in search of rare and exotic gemstones. In their travels, these gem merchants learned the beliefs and superstitions of their trading partners, including which stones curried favor with their gods and guarded against evil. But if you asked those merchants which gemstone they valued most, the answer was unanimous: malachite. 

As it was supposed to increase wealth, merchants would store malachite with their money and wear it during business transactions to attract profits. If a piece of malachite jewelry fell and broke, it was taken as a forewarning of potential disaster.

The guardian stone of merchants and travelers alike, malachite is a stunner. A luscious, deep green gemstone that’s banded by waves of black, no two malachite stones are alike, allowing wearers to attach their own personal and magical significance to its unusual patterns.

The tales of its good fortune are many. In parts of Italy, it was worn to ward off the evil eye. In 17th-century Spain, it assisted children with sleep and kept away evil spirits. During the Middle Ages, malachite amulets were said to maintain good health.
