When animal welfare and environmental concerns spurred demand for humane, Earth-friendly alternatives to leather, manufacturers responded with vegan leather. The catch? It only met one of the two requirements. Until recently, vegan leather has been made using petrochemicals — not exactly the green product consumers asked for! Vegan leather wasn’t leather at all!

A few years ago, two Mexican innovators decided they could do better and began developing a patented plant-based leather using a staple of their national cuisine: the nopal, or prickly pear, cactus. By crushing and sun-drying the leaves, they discovered they could produce a durable leather material that could be used in everything from purses to luxury car interiors.
