Not long ago, I was at our office in Arezzo to negotiate a deal on Italian gold, when my business partner Daniele announced that we could use a break and a breath of fresh air. He led me to his car, and before long we had left the city and were driving through the gorgeous Tuscan countryside.
It was springtime, and everything was in bloom — which, I was soon to discover, was the point of our excursion. In just under an hour, he stopped the car and announced we’d arrived. “Where?” I asked. “At the largest private rose collection in the world,” he replied.
Entering the garden was like stepping into a fantasy. Peacocks strutted among stone-edged beds and gnarled, drooping trees. Water lilies floated on a fountain pond. And everywhere, roses of every color, scent and pedigree teemed and cascaded — more than 7,000 varieties in total, I learned — the result of over 50 years of dedicated collection and cultivation.
