How low can we go?
We went to great depths for this ring
Traveling the world for the rare and the beautiful is what we do. But there are times that even we scratch our heads on just how far we will go. Or, shall we say, how deep we will go. Because when it comes to a gemstone 1000 times rarer than a diamond, we buckle up and dive deep. Tiffany and Company considers ethereal violet-blue tanzanite to be the gemstone of the 21st century.
Discovered in 1968, tanzanite is only mined in one place in the world –– in a 6 kilometer space at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Because it’s only found in one place in the world, mining experts estimate the supply could run out in the next 10 years. We needed to get a strong foothold on the limited supplies of this rare gem so we sent our buyer to Tanzania to see the mines first hand.
She made friends with a Tanzanian couple, Sune and Pia, who own a tanzanite mine where they have tirelessly worked for over 8 years before they struck tanzanite. She actually climbed down inside the mine, hundreds of feet below the ground, a feat she said was so scary she was blown away by the courage and hard work displayed every day by the miners who seek out these incredibly rare and amazing gems. Well, her daring paid off, as we got first dibs on the couple’s incredible find. Our great buy means a great buy for you.
