The gem that launched a thousand names

Just Unearthed!

There are many gemstones that have been named after individuals, including kunzite (George Frederic Kunz) and morganite (J.P. Morgan). But there is only one gemstone that has the distinction of being “the very first gemstone ever named after an individual,” and you’re looking at it.

In 1783 Dutch Colonel Hendrik Von Prehn brought samples of a new green gem to Europe from the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. Abraham G. Werner (the “father of German geology”) studied the samples, determined them to be a new gem species, and named the soft apple green gem after the Colonel. And, the name prehnite was born.

And, while you’re unlikely to find prehnite at your local jewelry store, we were able to secure large carats of gem worthy specimens that are very hard to come by. Here a nine carat cabochon of silky green prehnite is framed in amethyst as well as another African born beauty––tanzanite. When the name of the game is love, this  pioneering gemstone will help lead the way.
