Hungover Archaeologist Discovers Lost Treasure
Amulets modeled after Ancient Egypt!
If I hadn’t been hungover, I wouldn’t have made my first big archaeological find. Some 30 years ago, I was on my first archaeological dig near Luxor. To say I was green is an understatement; I was definitely more full of enthusiasm than experience. Perhaps it was just a bit of light hazing by the older diggers, but my birthday party at camp became an unexpectedly rowdy affair — let’s just say I’ll never look at vodka the same way again.
Waking up the next morning with the greatest hangover of my life, I faithfully put on my boots and headed out to my dig square. The Saharan sun was merciless. My head was pounding. Sand was in my teeth. Eventually I just grabbed a brush and swept the same patch of ground to make it look like I was actually working. Two hours into this charade, I was surprised by a new discovery. Wedged in between two limestone blocks was a stone scarab indicating that this was protecting the resting place of a long-lost pharaoh! Suddenly, I was the pride of dig. Even the weathered old coots who had dismissed me as a dilettante were impressed that I’d uncovered this hidden gem.
