Since pre-Christian times, the scallop shell has been an important symbol for western civilization. To the Celts, it represented the setting sun. In the early Christian church, the scallop shell represented rebirth. Baptismal fonts were often shell shaped, and a shell was regularly used to pour water over the heads of those being baptized.
Most famously, it’s the symbol of St. James the Great, brother of John the Apostle and the patron saint of Spain. Medieval Christian pilgrims traveling the Camino de Santiago were given scallop shells upon their arrival at St. James’ shrine in Santiago de Compostela city. The shells could be used to drink from springs and streams along the way; today, scallop shell-shaped trail markers illuminate the Camino’s path.
We’ve enlisted some of our most skilled artisans to celebrate this storied symbol with gorgeous, shimmering abalone. Nothing on earth creates an iridescent glow quite like abalone. Even the subtlest of movements elicits an ever-changing rainbow of colors. Set in .925 sterling silver finished with rhodium, an ultra rare and corrosion-resistant metal.
