When it comes to showing off American might, it’s hard to best Lady Liberty. That’s exactly what we’ve done with our Walking Liberty Blade, a 8.75" knife that features a genuine Walking Liberty half dollar that’s been cut cross-sectionally to show a majestic Lady Liberty striding toward the dawn of a new day.
Considered by art historians to be the most beautiful U.S. coin ever minted, the Walking Liberty half dollar came about in 1916 after Robert W. Woolley, the incoming director of the U.S. Mint, asked the Commission of Fine Arts to hire sculptors to create new designs.
To create the Walking Liberty Blade, we’ve set this incredible coin in the handle of a push dagger fashioned from Damascus steel, a legendary metal known for its toughness. What’s a push dagger? Why, it’s a specific piece of cutlery that originates from the
19th-century South. Politicians wore them for protection, and they were also popular with riverboat gamblers and residents of the Wild West for their ability to be concealed.
And Damascus steel comes with its own impressive pedigree. Known through the ages for its unmatched strength and sharpness, there are stories of it slicing gun rifles in half and being sharp enough to split individual strands of hair. Made from a mix of steel alloys and carbons, modern Damascus steel is folded at least 300 times to build its celebrated strength.
