Red emeralds were first discovered in Utah in 1904 by Maynard Bixby in Juab County. Gem-quality red emeralds were not found until 1958 when Lamar Hodges discovered a deposit in the Wah Wah Mountains in Beaver County, Utah The gem is thought to get its red color from the element manganese which takes the place of the aluminum in the beryl structure. Not only are red emeralds the rarest red gem after red diamonds, but they are truly a unique American treasure.
