Earth's birthstone reveals our planets origins

Earth was barren, flat and almost entirely under water 4.4 billion years ago. How do we know? A little gemstone told us.

Scientists at The Australian National University (ANU) were able to paint a picture of Earth in its infancy by studying zircon miner-al grains preserved in sandstone rocks in the Jack Hills of Western Australia dating to 4.4 billion years–– the oldest fragments of the Earth ever found. This means zircon has been cooking in the earth for at least five hundred million years longer than any diamond. 

Not only does zircon surpass diamonds in life experience, zircon has no visible inclusions so it’s incredibly clear to the eye. And, blue zircon in particular has the ability to split light into the various colors of the spectrum— creating fire that can rival any blue diamond.
